On February 7th, 2019 I attended a screening event hosted by the TRU AdventureU Club in the Clock Tower. The film was called The Radicals and it impacted me so much that I find myself often re-watching it when I am looking for inspiration. Below is a description of the film:

“With breathtaking cinematography, The Radicals is a documentary film that follows four snowboarders and surfers driven to become social and environmental stewards through their connection with the environments in which they play. By enjoying and appreciating their natural surroundings, these awakened athletes introduce us to some of the worlds most dedicated activists and game-changing wilderness initiatives that can actually change the world. The Radicals inspires us to shift our perspective, rise above the challenges of modern society and dig into our roots to create radical waves of change, while still enjoying the thrill of nature, gravity, and a sense of real purpose.”

The movie brings a new message to an adventure film, going beyond the mountains and oceans and showcasing exceptional cases of young athletes being activists. It challenged me to reflect on my relationship to the land when I interact with it during my outdoor adventure pursuits. The movie also opened my eyes to some of the less admirable resource practices in British Columbia, such as Hydro and farm fishing. By following multiple indigenous groups around the province as they battle to save their sacred lands and resources, the film educated me about some of the major issues that are happening so close to home. The activists and athletes in The Radicals inspired me to seek out and learn about less talked about environmental issues in the world as well as to have a deeper respect for the nature in which I travel and play in.
