environmental sustainability course-related work
The assignment below was for my Sustainable Tourism course. For this assignment, we were asked to read and analyze the report “The Invisible Burden of Tourism” which I have also posted below. The report looks at the negative impacts of tourism with a strong focus on issues that are typically forgotten or not thought about from a destination planning perspective. We were asked to discuss tourism externalities and speak to the idea that tourism is built on a consumption-production model that is not sustainable. We were also asked to speak to the solutions that the report provided and offer our opinions and ideas for how the issues can be addressed and how our industry can be changed for the better. I enjoyed this assignment because it allowed me to really unpack a lot of the negative aspects of the industry I am going to be entering. Doing this allowed me to strip away my rose-coloured glasses and look at the tourism industry as something that needs improving.
The assignment below was also for my Sustainable Tourism course. In class, we had been studying 3 sustainable tourism frameworks and so in this paper, we were asked to describe them, identify what aspect of sustainable tourism they are most focused on (destination planning; business planning; or consumer behaviours), analyze their main objectives and compare them. This assignment contributed to my understanding of sustainability in tourism significantly because it allowed me to get a firm grasp on models that I will be able to employ in my future career. As described in my assignment, the 3 frameworks are:
- David Weaver’s “Deliberate Alternative Tourism” Model
- C. Michael Hall et al’s Sustainable Tourism VENN Diagram
- Regenerative Travel (https://www.regenerativetravel.com/the-regenerative-shift/)
The assignment below was also for my Sustainable Tourism course. We were first tasked with reviewing the report “Value of Tourism on Vancouver’s North Shore” (posted below). Based on the 3 sustainability frameworks we had been studying in class, we were asked to then analyze the report through one of the models’ lenses. We next had to describe how the visitor “capacity management” strategies taken by the North Shore tourism region align with our chosen model’s framework, and identify any key gaps based on our understanding of the framework. I chose to focus mine on the Regenerative Travel framework which was really interesting because it allowed me to think about sustainability-related practical measures in a more conceptual way.
